Any experience with Smart Home technologies or mobile apps?

I am working on an app for residential living that fits into the Smart Home category.  Would love to know who has experience in this area, any do's or dont's, war stories, etc.

HI Aaron, I have spent my career creating software for the connected home markets.  I would be interested to hear what you are doing.  Check out my profile on linked in to get an idea of my background.

Aaron, In the past I have worked on automating the hotel rooms based on Hilton Honors profile preferences. The system was eventually deployed across 5 and 3 start properties for Hilton. Although the technologies have changes since then, some of the concepts are still applicable. I will be interested in learning what you are doing in Smart Home categories. I live on the East side. If you prefer to talk face to face, I will be happy to schedule some time with you. Cheers, Gaurav

I've created some custom solutions and used commercial ones. Mainly remote control and surveillance.   I'd be happy to join in on a conversation.

Hi Aaron - I'm working in this space as well, and would love to hear your perspectives on it and share what I've learned. We're both in SF - feel free to take a look at my profile and get in touch.

We develop Home Theater remote apps for Android, which often overlap with home automation, specifically lighting, curtains and climate control. Our apps do reasonably well, but it isn't the fast road to riches:) The biggest issue is obtaining control codes, both infrared and IP. Many manufacturers want users to use their own apps, so make it difficult for third parties. Kind Regards, Grahame Shannon _____

Hi Aaron, Thank you for reaching out. Your start-up sounds interesting. I believe you have checked a state of the market, because I remember encountered similar ideas few years ago. In any case I am sure there is enough place for many apps. However I am not sure it really fits Smart Home category. Smart Home usually deals with connection and control of various home appliances (i.e. devices) beside of just communications. I believe you will get responses from other group members as well.
