Best tips for running all hands company meetings?

From other CEO’s experience, what are some great tips for weekly all hands company meetings? What works and what doesn’t? How long should these meetings typically run for?

we did it at the end of the week as a happy hour with beer and appetizers. gave a very short update on the last week events and on plans for the next week. After the update we did a social event that changed from time to time, here are a few examples:
  • One of the employees would lecture on a subject he is interested in: photography, rock climbing, cats, advertisement
  • A social game: Psychiatrist, Mafia 
  • We had a gratitude token, so each week the employee that got the token last week had to pass the token to someone that he wants to thank for something he did in the last week
  • Employees prepared a list of questions for new hires and we asked every new hire to randomly pick 3 and answer them.

I agree with Zhenya with one additional thought. Share one thing you learned from a mistake. We often learn more from our errors than our successes. Don't let the negatives overpower the positive wins though. Definitely want it to be positive but truthful

All hands meetings make sense when the team is small, up to 50-60 people. Above that, they start becoming a hassle because of the time it takes and the problem in having the attention of a large group of people.

In such cases, I think a weekly newsletter along with a monthly all-hands meeting might make sense. All-hands meeting can only be used to showcase high level information and to introduce new hires.

Hi Ryan,

Completely agree with Zhenya: short and straight to the point.

Usually I advise teams to have team building and knowledge sharing (as Richard and Ofer mentioned) but depending on what you decide to implement in your company, it can be in another moment outside the meeting.

For example, you could have your hands-on short meeting on Monday morning like Zhenya mentioned and then have a more relaxed momento on Friday evening like Ofer mentioned.

Either way, it's important to consider how your people work when it comes to their individual productivity so your meetings don't mess with their own rythm.

It depends on the size of the company. I would say keep it motivational. Share last week achievements and next week's plans. Be honest about ups and downs. Error on sharing too much instead of too little. Introduce new hires. Meeting should be very short - 15-20 minutes if not less. Make them standing meetings which will save time and increase motivation to keep them short.
