Can someone shed some light on this Bill being floated in Congress?
A commercial that came on after the show Sunday Morning caught my attention. It was by a group whose site is called savetheinventor.org which is asking for individual inventors and their supporters to sign a petition found on their site. The petition asks congress not to make such a radical reform to the patent system for a second time in two years. A system that had not been overhauled in its history as radically as it was two years ago changing from a first-to-invent to a first-to-file is now about to make its second radical overhaul in less then two years. A Bill that is being floated in Congress which, as the group suggests, will basically eliminate small inventor's patent rights.
What the Bill will do is change the process for infringement lawsuits making it demonstratively harder, more costly and lengthier to file and win an infringement case. This will make it much easier for other companies to infringe and will allow only the big corporate giants to be able to go after infringement settlements.
I was surprised to see as big of a push to go after the bill because had I not seen the commercial I would have never known about this issue. The group does agree that groups that are considered Patent Trolls (groups that collect patent and do not make anything but just use their IP to sue) need to be eliminated. However, the Bill seems to be targeting small inventors because if patent troll companies are big enough they could still continue to sue.
Does anyone have information regarding this Bill? How likely is it to pass? If it does, what is the time frame? What are individual inventor's to do?
