Braintree vs. Stripe?

Any thoughts - positive or negative from those that have used braintree or stripe and the pros and cons of each? Trying to decide between the two.

Routeam.com is transitioning away from Braintree to Stripe. The benefit to platform subscribers is 1. They maintain an individual account with dashboard to track easily and 2. Get paid faster, in days. Braintree is a shared account model that we could not use as we grow into multi-user locations. Sent from my iPhone

Well not just now but even after choosing one over the other you might be faced with such questions, there is always pros and cons to each of the gateways, I am from https://sudopay.com and I would suggest you integrate https://sudopay.com as that will give you the ability to easily use multiple payment gateways and as well switch from one gateway to the other one.

Depends what you are trying to do. 

For basic payments then Stripe is likely quicker to get up and running, implementation is straightforward with both. Braintree offer decent incentives (free processing on first $50k) and both generally offer better rates once you're processing at scale (though you can probably find even better rates if you bring your own merchant accounts). 

For anything more complex like marketplace setups then it depends on your requirements.

This exact same question was asked in the Austin Startups FB Group. Here was my response:

I've tried to work with the Braintree API in the past and have had the same developer experience each time (both pre/post acquisition). The API experience is lacking. The docs were rarely updated to reflect changes, the API clients were incomplete, some of the API wasn't very intuitive, etc. I originally went with them because their processing costs were lower, and ultimately switched to Stripe because the slightly higher fees yet lower time commitment with Stripe outweighed the development costs with Braintree.

I am from the industry and I would absolutely go with Stripe. Both are expensive so depending on what you're needs are you can find cheape

The initial $50k incentive from Braintree is very compelling... I can say, though, that I successfully used stripe for several years before moving to a more "traditional" merchant account, and Stripe always worked exceptionally well. That was back when they held your money for 7 days... now they get it to you quite quickly. No complaints, easy setup...

All of these processors are quite pricey, so if you are going to start pushing any sort of volume through it, you may want to consider a traditional merchant account with an authorize.net or similar-type gateway. You may get better rates by 100-500 (or more) basis points.

Oh... and Stripe isn't a paypal company.... I don't dislike Paypal like I used to when they would routinely hold 30% of funds for 90 days, but I'm still not a great fan.  So for me, that's a plus...

I agree with someone above regarding Stripe is better for quick payments.  However, we went with Braintree because it fits our business model better.  We charge "per session" and have plans for a recurring payment system.  Braintree is better for that.  I must also say Braintree has had excellent developer support and their dashboard for reviewing and handling financials is pretty intuitive.

I've personally worked with Stripes API and I can certainly say it's straightforward to integrate and their customer support is awesome too

100% Stripe.  Stripe has won the minds of developers.  Their API is easy to work with, well documented and they support many many countries.  This has caused more developers to integrate with Stripe than probably any other payment processor.  

Especially if you will be using WordPress as your platform (and most startups probably should), all the popular payment plugins support Stripe.
