As we know, Power Line Communication (PLC) uses an existing wire for communication but at a fraction of a cost and especially for retrofit installations. Since we need two modems to establish data communication though the each segment of physical wire, it can also be used for our advantage and develop low cost functionality to monitor even critical components in addition to providing command and control functionality. Surprisingly, this technology is the least used technology for SmartHome and SmartHotel deployments in the world today, where my belief is that it should be better suited than WiFi. Appreciate your views, comments and any findings that would enlighten the readers on the pros and cons of PLC.
This will explain:
Mainly not that reliable, high costs and better alternatives
Just a clarification...my comment above on PLC is based on Narrowband PLC (NB-PLC) and not Broadband PLC or BPLC, which I admit, had a lot of issues. We had several large BPLC deployments in 2005~2008 period which did not work as expected. However, NBPLC is a different technology offering altogether and I can vouch for reliability. I have many years of experience in deploying this technology in several countries including Mexico.
