Can you offer equity based on performance to an employee?

We launched an MVP about six months ago and got some really good feedback. I want to hire a few part-time devs and I’m able to pay them a strong salary. I’d like to throw some equity into the equation to save us some cash. I think we’ll get a lot of bites just because we can offer salary, so I want to make sure our devs hold up for more than a few weeks and don’t just do the bare minimum to get the equity. Will devs go for this? Does anyone have any advice or resources on how to implement a performance-based equity program for employees?

You can add a vesting period.

"Vesting gives an employee rights to employer-provided assets over time, which gives the employee an incentive to perform well and remain with the company."

You can offer equity in the US. You will need a good lawyer to write up the paperwork.
