Do strategic leadership means change?

Business leaders are asked to strategically plan their action and act according to the (strategic) plan.Strategic leadership needs to ensure that the proper adjustments are done on the move, as changes happen on a daily basis. There will always be a gap between the global, mega trends, our plans and the ever changing reality.

I believe that strategic business leaders should shape capabilities by adapting internal plans and systems to fit the external environment. I do think that leaders have no option but to become change agents for the benefit and success of given organization.

Thank you Brent Hultman for your kind words and for expanding so well on my analogy - I try bringing a bit of artistry to the more cerebral part of my reflection!

Daniel-Flavius Lucica your point is well taken; here in Montreal and other large cities in Canada though we are starting to see CEO's of medium to large corporations opened to a transformation towards more agility in the organization.

As part of the Agile Montreal community we now have a community of practice specifically focused on organizational agility and the demand for knowledge, learning and sharing is quite real and increasing.

Evangelists we must be to get people to emulate the Steve Jobs or Elon Musks of the world with their own authentic strengths and weaknesses to move innovation forward in a holistic and healthy fashion.

If you do not reach the finish line all the goals and strategic planning does not matter.  Strategic planning to reach a goal requires that you understand the cards in your deck and have an understanding the positions of the other players and the remaining cards in the deck.  I have worked for market leaders and even an employee with a few years at a company can see why the company will achieve its goals.  and I have worked for followers and it is just as evident that it will improve its position. 
Meir, the change in management just at the top does not change the position but as more of the management team change the company position in the market can change.  So you should be considering the culture since the construction of a working strategy is a team effort.

If one is not the market leader, than one should at least be an agile follower. If one is not an agile market leader, is soon to become an agile follower. Everybody talks about agile and lean these days and that is easy to do when you are a start-up, but much more complicated in large global organizations.
Much more complicated to walk the talk when you have 5 layers of middle management.

How many CEOs are willing to give up power for agility, because that's what it takes?
Very few if you ask me and that's not because they don't know better. It's because they don't really trust and that's reality. The more the risk, the more conservative the approach.

When we talk about change, technology is at the forefront.
The Nokia - Apple case is a good example.Apple -Samsung is another. This just proves how hard it actually is. 

How good can you identify and understand the needs of your target market in order to figure out exactly what they will want in the future? 
Because if you just focus on their current needs, you'll always be one step behind.

So much for a strategic plan. Where are the visionary leaders, the Steve Jobs and the Elon Musks of the world?

In the PMI Today magazine of August 2015 Todd Hutchison, MCom, MBA, PMP during an in-depth interview offered the following: ''Organizational agility is the ability of the organization to be flexible, adaptive and responsive to change that results in some improvement to its position. It is about capitalizing on opportunities when they arise’’. 

Whether you are launching a start-up or working as a salaried employee for a Fortune 500 company, this foundational definition applies to each set of different circumstances based on the variables of the organisations you are currently evolving with. The goal is to have a plan - similar to a sketch on a blank canvas - and apply different strokes with various tools with several materials as the canvas unfolds to hopefully create a master piece with you teams - internally and externally.

The analogy of a canvas that Sylvie Leduc uses is apt.  The competitive landscape that inspires all that we do in business calls for the artists (leaders) to pick a medium that allows them to plan out the work on their canvas and then to be prepared to rework it as they create their masterpiece to capture the changes that the landscape presents as they work.  In application this looks like laying out a strategic plan, communicating it to everyone else who needs to contribute to it and then to change the plan in response to change as well as to the contributions of all of the "artists" on the team.  Life offers us large canvases so we can invite more than one person to work on the masterpiece.  Renaissance master artists would have apprentices do much of the actual painting of their work based on the masters drawing.  If, as leaders, business people think in terms of drawing the strategic sketch and being willing to turn the brushes and paint over to other talented team members they can step back and see the work in progress and suggest improvements as the work is being done.  It's easier to be a visionary leader when you are able to see the whole canvas than it is when you are so close to it that you can only see individual brush strokes.
