Do you get your startup employees gifts and if so, what?

Considering Christmas is right around the corner, should I give gift to my startup employees? What sorts of gifts are the best to give out to your team? Curious as to what others typically do for their employees around the Holidays.

Gifts are important, and they pay dividends down the road.  If you are very strapped for cash, choose something small like gourmet chocolates or a gift card for movie tickets.  If you can spare the money, bonuses (like Dave suggested) are best.  A "small tea session," which you are considering, sounds like another work meeting/obligation to me.

This is very personal, cultural and also depends on how big your team is and your overall financial situation. Our development team is in Serbia where it is tradition to give all the kids of the employees a "Santa Claus present" , there are a lot of them, it is expected and done by everyone, so we do. In general a dinner with formal recognition (certificate, acknowledgement) and letter of thanks and appreciation is more personal and appreciated than $250 in my view. Also bonus's should be reserved for exceptional contributions and then be significant in my view. Giving the same to everyone does not accomplish anything except reduce your cash on hand.

Yes, I did.  I don't have a ton available to give right now but I am giving them a moderate bonus ($250-$500) this year to show my appreciation.  It's not a lot but it will let them know how I feel about them.  Need to "Act As If" and this line of thinking and acting will get us all there.

As a startup, you might always have cash crunch however I would like consider team spending some money on team building activities instead of gifts to employees. May be team lunch once a quarter with recognition, appreciation should work.

It's great that you want to give a Christmas gift to your employees. You can give as per your capacity and capability. Since it is a startup, you can organize a tea party or a Christmas lunch or dinner depending on your budget. Personally, if my budget is tight I would like to invite them for a small tea session. Other startups and companies are doing different things because it is being done as per their capacity and financial budget.

Good Luck..
