Email Deliverability: Round 2

Hey FD friends,

First off, I'd like to thank everyone who has helped me out so far. I'm grateful to be part of such a supportive community.

I was hoping to pick some brains about the next challenge in my project: finding a solid part time resource for developing and maintaining an email deliverability program. I've taken the feedback from previous questions and have recognized that an expert pitching in will be important for us.

In my other businesses, I've hired quite a few folks, full time and part time, but haven't yet done much recruiting for part-time folks who might want to take equity.

Has anyone else done this and can recommend strategies?

I've done part time equity in a few companies now, with several different models.  Here's is one model :

- Fixed percentage equiry (ie 5%)
- Track hours and report statuses weekly, base hourly rate on X
- Divy up work into 5 milestones, each milestone gets you closer to the full 5%

- Payout of hours worked at 10% royalties (double your agreed percentage)
- Payout of hours worked at 2X regular rate 
- Once hours logged at 2X are payed out, Royalty percentage drops back to 5%

Usually some cash up front will be required as an incentive...

There's another model we developed with a pie chart of hours and hours logged and no fixed percentage (pie chart changes weekly based on work done). It's a bit more fair this way, but you really need the right people for this method to work.

Avoid complications and look at a royalty structure that gives someone a chance at an upside that is directly tangible. It also makes communication of this trade off easier to understand. No valuation, no voting rights, no registration, no legal issues around accredited investors for part time employees, ....

Build a product, split the revenue, share the upside. Royalties.

just equity, or equity/cash split?
