Finding and partnering with device makers for Internet of Things data/dashboard platform

Alberto Alonso President at Global Gate Systems LLC.

January 8th, 2015

We are working on a platform for Internet of Things (IoT) devices to communicate and send the data to.

The idea is to partner with device markers that focus on hardware and we take care of the cloud software side.

We are building the API, data acquisition scaling and customizable dashboards for users to select which widgets they want (ie. graphs, overlays, data tables, maps, etc.)

What I need help with is in proficiently finding the right partners that focus on hardware (OEM or branded) and developing the engagements.

Any help or pointers appreciated.

Thanks,

Alberto

Hi Alberto,

We are an independent design house who do just that! We focus on the hardware, and provide as much software as the system needs in order to plug into the customer's existing software setup. We specialize in electronics hardware design for automation, medical devices and IoT. We also help the customer prepare for manufacturing.

Thanks, I'll get in touch with them. That's a perfect example, since it seems that they don't have the cloud platform behind their hardware. Perfect partnership opportunity.

My background is in HMI and control, and I considered doing something like this, but there are a hundred other companies that are building IoT "dashboards" and "cloud services".  You would need something really special to stand out (hopefully you have something).

If all you're doing is a data repository/exchange and some graphs and other widgets though, you're fighting a losing battle IMO.

Ken, let me know if you have some time to talk. I'm quite familiar with HMIs as I was a process control engineer. IoT is bringing that to the masses in some way, but the type of data and the reason for that data is what makes it different.

It is no longer about the production floor or a small tightly integrated vertical product. How the data streams are integrated and combined should be what brings the additional value vs. what I've seen so far.

Hi Alberto,

Did you try a grassroots campaign? Release your API for all the popular languages with awesome docs and great examples. Post it on Reddit and likes. Participate in developer communities, go to meetups. Start your own meetup. Devs just LOVE this stuff!

You'll get an industry recognition very quickly. And then guess who'll be pushing your solution internally in all these companies you want to reach so much?
