Panos: certainly the day-to-day has not been and will not be affected in Western Ukraine (Lviv and Ivano Frankivsk), where my cofounder is based. I'm not sure the same could be said of Kyiv or Kharkiv in the east. While there is no violence or soldiers in the streets, I will say though that the guys on my team are very patriotic, so they are affected emotionally -- not that it affects their work. Hi there It sounds as though your concerns may come from the crisis in Crimea .... I think that's a valid question, and I would probably avoid contracting with any Ukranian company for anything right now, software or otherwise. My worries: 1. IP theft .... this is a bit less likely in Eastern Europe than in China, but still possible. Source code is almost never a big risk, product plans and designs are. 2. Be careful how you do it .... the classic outsource setup of having product leads in the USA and rank and file dev in India does NOT work. Ever. I've even tried to work with an in-house offshore team there and it was a waste of my time. Either put the whole project there, or restrict them to bug fixes and maintenance on older product (no good for a startup obviously). The time zones make collaboration from here challenging, and there is a cultural norm in India not to ask questions when you don't understand something. Beware that the bargain shops re-outsource to Vietnam, China and Bangladesh which doesn't help the communications either. 3. In my experience, the following out-sourcing setups do work: - team in India doing low level QA, e.g. point and click UI testing, overnight, US based dev team gets feedback every morning. About 25-30% of US cost. - team of smart guys in Eastern Europe doing major modules where daily collaboration isn't strictly necesary. It takes a lot longer to ramp them than US based resources which again makes it not startup friendly, but they are good. I've had teams in Kiev, UKR and Brno, CZ. Timezone overlap is key, I used to do daily scrums with the whole team in Brno and Austin together over video conf. 50% of US cost.b - smart, young, high end QA folks (test automation) in Costa Rica ... similar cost to Eastern Europe, our time zone, US-style tertiary education Cheers Dave

Hi Taisiia,

There are quite a few recommendations that were posted by the community what you should do and not do when you outsource. You can do a search and read all of those but in general you should follow them independent of where your outsourced developers are. Things like culture, clear requirements, payments after your acceptance etc.

I'm using a great team for my startup that's on-shore/off-shore. The architecture, project management, high level work is managed by a senior team in NJ, while the coding is completed by senior engineers in Belarus. 

My experience has been very positive. The devs in Belarus all speak English, work standard workday hours, and, most importantly, think like real tech team members, not hired hands. The prices are very good, and it's allowed me to extend my company's runway significantly.

Hello Taisiia,

Ukrainian IT-market has proven to be a good option to build development teams. It is cost efficient and outstands with highly qualified developers. Considering the risks – they will arise regardless of the country where you want to hire a remote developer or team.
