Good browser-based video-conferencing service?

Timothy Brown Engineering Manager, Lyft Line

I'm looking for suggestions for services / technologies that provide the following.  Any input would be much appreciated!
  • Browser-based (Flash or WebRTC preferred, ideally not a plugin or java)
  • Embeddable (I want the experience to be on our site, not on the other company's site -- I'm open to suggestions around hacking an iframe in).
  • Recording capabilities -- I'd like to be able to record the streams from the conversation.
  • Video and Audio
  • BONUS:  Ability to drag and drop / share images on a "canvas" of some sort while chatting.

We use TokBox OpenTok. They are the only one we have found that is able to record with WebRTC. The WebRTC recording capability is still in Beta though, so you may have to apply to get in, but we use it in production already, so nothing wrong with the functionality, just that they are limiting who can use it for now.

Do not use flash based solution. All flash-based solutions suck. We even developed our own implementation, thinking we could do a better job, but it is flash limitation.

I do not know about the last bullet point, but OpenTok for sure covers the first 4.

Timothy --

We're increasing using Brand Live ( more and more and are really satisfied with it. Easy set up, nothing to download, great templates. And reasonably priced.

While not exactly what you're looking for, you might want to take a look at google hangouts api: DBH

I've POC'ing Licode.  Seems to work pretty well.  With some slight changes in the server and client code you can change how all the recording is done.  Right now it defaults to /tmp/fileName.mkv on the sever.  I'm updating it so save where I want and then notify the server of a recording to persist it out to S3 storage and do the tagging to the user and topic.

A number of my clients are looking for embedding some kind of video/audio recording capabilities into their sites for crowd sourcing feedback.

You can try, no download is required and it is flash based, so it doesn't work on iPads/iPhones.

I can tell from experience though that flash based solutions suck, especially screen sharing. If you only use video and audio it may work for you.

We have a HIPAA compliant solution we are developing, but it does involve a plugin to be installed up-front.  Recording I am sure can be managed, but we can definitely do screensharing and transfer files via the video feed.  It may be overkill for what you want, but let me know if you'd like to learn more.  Beyond that, agree on Flash (although OpenTok uses it to some extent) and disagree on - it DOES work on iPads and iPhones, but does require an app download.

Dmitri, has native iOS apps. Works great on those devices.
