I have an app coming out on iOS in May, and as I network I'm gathering emails for a mailing list to let people know of progress, launch date, etc. Once the app is launched I'll also need to add customer emails automatically. Can anyone recommend a good contact management tool that isn't overly complex or expensive, and allows for unsubscribing and all those other requirements I'm as yet unaware of?
Mailchimp (awesome) constant contact, etc. There's a litter to choose from
but I love the abundance of tools and integration with mailchimp all for
free and they're from my hometown of Atlanta so doubly proud.

Sent from my HTC One please excuse any typos.
I use MailChimps for my e-mail list / contact manager. Then you should sign up for Unbounce as your landing page, and then turn on integration to MailChimps. Then when people visit your landing page and enter their e-mail, Unbounce will automatically add it to your list in MailChimps.
There is also LeadSquared, which does both, but it is more expensive and a little more complicated and in-depth.
+1 for Mailchimp, if used properly it can leverage a big chunk of automated direct marketing.

Everyone I know uses LaunchRock to put up a splash page with an email harvest application. It syncs with Mailchimp, I believe, so you can port your email addresses into mailchimp or you can export an csv or xls and import into mailchimp.
37Signals.com, the owner of Highrise, is getting out of that business. See the info buried in the Q&A at the bottom of http://37signals.com/.

Yes, I mentioned Highrise. They are no longer going to add new features and
are seeking to sell the service to another company.

Salesforce is a powerful CRM that is for customer relationship management.
MailChimp has a SalesForce integration that can be used to sync Mailchimp
signups into Salesforce for CRM purposes. I use 37Signals Highrise for CRM.
For email sign-up and marketing, most on the list recommend MailChimp,
which is a service that is start-up friendly, given it's 2,000 free emails
and graduated pricing plan. I think Rachel is looking for a splash page,
which LaunchRock or KickOff Labs can provide.
Here are some links:

If you don't want to use Launch Rock, you can also use WordPress. There are
a few options for WordPress / Mailchimp integrations, which are listed here
under a search for LAUNCH on the Mailchimp site:
http://connect.mailchimp.com/search?query=launch
Return the search query and you'll see that there are some WordPress
options as well.
This is an area I'm definitely enthusiastic about, I once built and
operated a major email marketing service.
You're definitely thinking about things the right way ... you don't want to
do this stuff by hand. The gold standard low-end email marketing vendor is
Constant Contact, but I don't know their entry pricing. Mailchimp
(astutely) starts at free.

I use insight.ly and the free integration with Mailchimp to do just this.
Contacts can originate from a linked Gmail account or a variety of other
sources. Then, depending on the message and target, I can assign tags to
groups and create mailing lists in Mailchimp. Insightly is relatively
cheap and Mailchimp is free up to 2000 contacts.
Cheers,
Adam
