Hiring foreign employees in Canada

We are looking to bring a new full time developer on board, and I do not want geographical barriers holding us back from getting the right person on board.

Has any Canadian company hired developers from abroad? Care to share your experience?

I was employed by a small Canadian company a few years ago, working remotely from the States. It was a bit of a shock for them when it became clear they'd have to pay most of my COBRA bill (in order for me to have insurance) on top of salary -- which made me more expensive than hiring a Canadian. As I understand it, it's common for Canadian companies to offer some *supplemental* medical insurance and dental to employees, but apparently it's still much cheaper than COBRA. If you haven't paid COBRA before, $1,500 per month for an employee with a spouse and child was a pretty good deal a few years ago. I'd guess it's somewhat more expensive now.

Hi Fahad I don't know what kind of question(s) you would post to an employer but I am an employee hired by a Canadian employer and might help you understand what an employee might expect when he/she lands in this new territory. Thanks Ranjeet Sent from my iPhone

Hi Fahad,

I brought talents from France, Scotland, Switzerland, US, Brasil, etc.

The experience has been outstanding. It wasn't always easy from a paperwork perspective, but the talents are great.

I highly recommend it.
