We are building a startup on complementary health and wellness in NYC. We are very interested on developers and designers who may want to contribute their and be part of our company from the beginning in return for equity. How do we find and attract such developers and designers?

It's hard but doable.

You will need 3 things.

  1. customer validation that your ideas is genius. At least 3 people who you've pitched and they asked for a contract and said "how soon can you start".
    1. this is the most important part - if you haven't done this stop everything and go do it immediately.
    2. if you have this, can you get cash up front to pay a developer?
  2. A very well defined MVP. Emphasis on the "M" part. Your developer will need a clear idea of the work expected
  3. A date/event when they will start getting paid. No-one is going to work indefinitely for zero pay.

Best of luck :-)

Why use American developers when non-U.S. developers as good and charge a fraction of the U,.S. rates? I can provide contacts of the Philippines and India which I have used successfully.

The one group that doesn't need a pay check are the recent retired. Can you discover who recently retired in the industry your interested in. If they are good and the actual tasks of creating products and have done this their whole life my bet is they enjoy it.
