How do you market an online store on Shopify, Etsy, or similar sites?

I have a friend who invested a lot of time and money into product (She sells children’s toys) and launched an online store to crickets. Very little interest. She’s not giving up yet and asked me to help her market her store. Not really my forte, so I was hoping the CFL community might have some marketing pros/people with online store experience who could help on this subject.

Marketing is nothing just to understand customers. Firstly, analyse the location of store like type of customer visit there.

Then as a customer ask yourself why should I buy, after a period you will got proper solutions. See either way of sellling or showcase attracts customers. Try to put discount in innovative way. Solution lies within products, get that how to sell. Encourage products on social media by better plan.

Etsy was a waste of time. Wanted money on escalated listings after the initial posting wasn't selling. Etsy is atrocious at customer service, totally non-responsive to my complaints about improper listing criteria and postings that kept wasting money. I suggest that you put your precious startup founder's time into something else, because Etsy won't get you sales regardless of how Etsy's self promotion will mislead you into thinking that it will.

Amazon is also a waste. you may get some sales if you do the complete Fulfilled by Amazon program. But the time and resources you put into that will be better spent with your own website's web store, and aggressive SEO to drive traffic to your site.

Hi Svetlana. There is no easy answer here. Is the site / company US based? Is the site getting traffic that is not converting into sales or is it just not getting any visitors? The answer to this question will indicate if there is an awareness problem or a product / pricing problem. If your friend is dealing with the prior, I would start by making sure the store is SEO optimized and begin running a few targeted google adwords campaigns / tests (be careful, this can quickly get costly). Next up, I would tackle social. The key questions to ask here are: Is the store set up with it's own social media accounts? Is there a social media content plan is place? Who are the influencers in the category that can help get the word out? If the problem is actually the later, your friend should start by making sure the store's pricing and policies are competitive with Amazon and adjust accordingly. Let me know if either of you want to chat further. Best - AMY

Is she doing any marketing or just hoping people will find it on their own?

She needs to understand who her customers are, find out where they are, then go tell them about her site and product.

What is the site/product?
