How does one join a board?

There are alot of websites that advertise board positions. They ask for membership fees. Has anyone had any luck with these types of websites? What are other ways to apply for board membership.

I've found the best way to join the board of any organization is to build a relationship with the people involved.

Recently FD had an extensive discussion about ExecRank. The overwhelming consensus was negative. I have had first-hand experience with and would not recommend them either. I don't know of any website that's been effective in this regard. The best approach, I suppose, is to go the old-school route: networking!
