How effectively have your efforts been to use social media for early stage startups?

How effectively have your efforts been to use social media to generate awareness for your open positions? I see a fair amount of postings in my social feeds from employees at companies posting links to jobs, but can't find anyone who can confirm they have sourced good candidates through that type of activity. Wondering how those of you in the same boat as us are creatively getting your positions in front of good prospective candidates - do you use social media at all?

From my experience, straight social media advertisement - from a company twitter / Facebook accout - doesn't generate many candidates.

Using your own network, and the network of the people who work with you, on the other hand works well. What you need to do is request your team to share the roles widely within their network, or even better: directly to the people they think would be best at the role. This always returned the best quality candidates for me.

As an internal recruiter, networking (events, friends) would then be my second port of call.

Third is LinkedIn, searching people via skills and reaching out to the candidates I thought were best suited for the role.

Ultimately, hiring someone is building a personal relationship with them, and that works best person to person. Showing that you are hiring and growing on social media is great for the company's exposure, yet not necessarily to attract people. I use my social media channels to increase awareness, yet I always do hiring person to person.

I'd agree that straight "job postings" on social media haven't worked for me. However, talking to my network: friends, x-coworkers, their friends and circles has been very productive.  I think that in startup-land that's the best way to go ... I'm not at the point I want to pay recruiters, and frankly, I'm looking for people with a proven track record.  That's best found through my network (and that of other players already on my team).

I have tried it through Facebook and Twitter and it has been a big fail. We are now a start-up with 15 people and LinkedIn has worked for 10 hires and 4 have been through a recruiter. Social media casts too wide a net and while bringing lots of candidates, going through all the potential candidates is an time consuming process, especially if you do not want to miss the potential diamond in the rough.

I'm a very small start-up (me and my assistant) and I use social media every time I am looking for someone. On linkedin it has gotten me in contact with the company currently working on the development of my product. My assistant I found through facebook, as well as almost everyone that's ever been involved. I have some key people in my network that I ask to share my posts and it's almost always through the shared posts that people get in contact. For me, as a very small start-up, social media is a most important tool to get people's attention as my network that way can vouch for both me and the person getting in contact. I have seen social media postings used for more tactical sharing between staff or friends of staff and their contacts over general posting into the world. Having the option to easily share a posting with contacts over social media platforms has proven successful for me in the past. Making it easy for people to tag people about an opening has netted me some solid ( or at least respectable) candidates for the interview process. I don't find much value in people stumbling on a post on your website, it does show growth or that there is turn over. -Andy

During my past 5 startups in 15 years, raising over $4 million from angel investors and filling many positions via use of social media, i think if you are strategic, you can find highly qualified candidates..  I have even raised money from social media (friend of a friend approach).  One can find not only qualified candidates but also strategic partnerships as well, again if strategically positioned.  

I would suggest a large base of followers/friends/connections on FB/FD/IN (not so familiar with twitter but i hear its amazing).. Good luck and let me know how i can help

I had post earlier that was removed for no reason. Anyway, I was mentioning that with twitter, I am connecting with at least two candidates a day. Facebook hasn't been a source of candidates. LinkedIn is okay but is changing rapidly to be less a of professional network. There is a huge problem with fake profiles on LinkedIn. In-Mails are hit and miss. In order to be successful on social media, you have to have a lot of followers. You are only as good as your network.  That has been my experience. There are some advanced sourcing methods, I have learned which make social medial more effective. There are also free training and webinars offered by the sourcing specialists. I have a lot of these trainings and ppts saved. I would be happy to share them. SourceCon is also a great resource. There are also some great sourcing groups on Facebook.

I have used a local (Seattle) technology focused mailing list to great success. I'm not sure if this counts as social media, but it's worked for me!

I have had a great deal of success with various social media tools to generate awareness of my new product(s). You first need to determine how you measure success, based upon your expectation from using these tools. My experience, has been they are generally great for awareness and getting visibility in the marketplace, less for monetization, even though FB is becoming very creating with their posting and targeting protocol. I have had great success using that function on FB.
