Channel sales

How to identify and engage a sales channel?

I make/sell a unique product for under $400 targeted to some niche markets. It is a one time sale, with no built-in subsequent revenue stream from the end user (think: a small appliance). How to identify and attract appropriate sales channels.

I assume I need to establish a sales track record on my own before approaching channels.
How much of a track record?
What do they look for? What kinds of records do they want to see?
How to identify who to talk to at the sales channel?
What to say in the initial contact - just a sales pitch for the product?
