How to safely look for company names/URL's ?

I recently found a great name/URL for a start-up on instantdomainsearch.com. I did not purchase URL right away since I wanted to get feedback first. Today, I was very disappointed when I noticed that a big registrar company snatched it away on the same day I found it. I did not tell anybody and I did not even make a note on my computer.I feel that I need to use Whois only.Does anybody share my experience? Thank you!

It's pretty well known that Go Daddy looks at search volume and buys ones they think are going to be bought. I always use whois.com to look at domains...

I use whois on the command-line.  But so far, I've found that I can trust my domain registrar (namecheap.com).  They're affordable, but seem to be of high quality and integrity as a business.

I suggest that you listen to a Reply All podcast episode entitled: "This Domain is For Sale". It talks about the mysterious Byzantine underworld of domain sales. It's quite interesting how this market operates.

My understanding is that even looking will trigger a bot to purchase it. Don't search unless you plan to buy.

The founder of  instantdomainsearch.com actually got back to me to be fair.

Thank you, InstantDomainSearch worked the best for me. Is there anything similar out there? I like "Instant"..

Thank you, Jessica! By the way, many years ago it must have happened the first time but I thought it was a coincidence. I won't touch GoDaddy anymore.

Only use whois and purchase immediately and then don't renew.  I hate the squatting, but given domains have become real estate, I must do so.
