I have been working as a software developer since last 3.6 years.
I have really good organizing skills and would love to try something in event management field. Where can I start from?
It depends a little on what you mean by event management. There are several categories of this. The first one I think of is trade shows (conventions). Then there are seminars, festivals, entertainment functions, catering, and street presence.
Let's assume you mean the most common one, trade shows.
There are a LOT of junior level and intern positions with events companies, and also a lot of temps hired to staff events. For the career oriented positions, start with www.eventcareers.com
For temp positions, check your local temp agency and call the convention center and ask them which service bureaus and agencies supply most of the staff for events held there.
Trade shows are high pressure machines when they're running. No one is going to give you responsibility for parts of the actual event until you've been working that event for more than a year and have attended the event as a guest. It's too risky, because there's only one chance to get it right for the whole year in most cases. Most shows run once a year, or they have a schedule that runs in multiple cities around the year. There is a perpetual engine that keeps working almost the entire time that the event is not taking place, with some break possible usually around 3 months after the event takes place.
The first thing you want to do if you are getting into event management is to attend as many trade shows, seminars, and other events as you possibly can. Get in with the staffing agency, which will help you learn the hierarchy of the different roles in events. Perhaps work on your CEP (certified event planner) certificate. It's not quick. And I'll say it one more time, attend as many conventions as possible. Subscribe to Event Marketer magazine, there are others, but I like this one best, and go to their events.
How to advance in a specific area really depends on what role you eventually want to get into.
This is generally not a quick start career. But, it can also be a real thrill if you're really into it.
I've done just this, so I can tell you from my experience. I had my own IT company but loved live music and events.
I agree with the others who are responding to you. Events Management is a large industry and it is best you state what kind of events you wish to enter into.
For me, I got a job as a DJ and started to work every night and weekends when I wasn't doing my IT work. After some years, I built a good reputation, knew every club, entertainer, musician, singer, venue, photographer, other DJs and resorts in my area and soon my DJ work expanded to organising events for people, weddings, parties, corporate gigs. It just grew like that, so if you love events, hang out at the places you like, make friends, organise gigs for friends, and if you're good at it, you'll get paid for it.
