Product Design · Physical design

I'm looking to design a physical non-electronic product as part of a startup idea solution.

Are there any go to places to find industrial design folks who can do this affordably, in the same vein as a 99designs?
You have an idea. Now it’s time to turn it into a brilliant and beautiful product. In this course, you’ll learn specialized tactics to study your user, create testable wireframes, and transform them into fully functioning features and products.

I would check out https://www.elance.com/r/contractors/q-Product%20design

There is also a physical startup accelerator in Boston, MA called https://www.bolt.io/ that is hosting a pitch event through January 30th.

I think I need more detail on what you're building.
http://www.shapeways.com/ will let you 3D print an object if you have a CAD model. Metal or plastic.
I'm not sure who can do a CAD model for you, but there are manufacturing sourcers available who have on-staff mech-engineers you can use, but that is not on the level of 99design costs.

I've always had good luck with Peopleperhour.com. It's UK based so much of the talent is in London. Rates are extremely reasonable.

As other people stated, it's highly dependent on what you're making. Regardless though, the best way to get help is to talk to your potential manufacturers. I worked with seaways injection molding down in Florida and they connected me with a guy who had designed products they made in the past. Manufacturers often need to recommend changes to products to clients so they need to know people with the necessary expertise.

I do custom designs in most CAD formats. I have mechanical, biomedical, and electrical engineering degrees and 25+ years of experience with design. I can also print prototypes on my own 3D printers. I specialize in biomedical designs, but also have extensive robotics experience and enjoy working on one-off projects of all kinds.
