Is it better to build an IT company from the scratch or buy an ailing company?

All my life I have managed P&L for others and created successful consulting practices. The biggest was zero to $45MM/year over three year, for a large consulting firm and most recent was zero to $4MM/year for a no name start-up. I am tired of corporate politics and wish to get out.

I am sure others in this forum has faced similar predicament. I will appreciate any insights from your experience. Does it make sense to buy a retiring/ailing business or build a company from the scratch.

Thank you in advance for your guidance.

@Guru,
Thank you very much for the article about the Customer Acquisition Cost. I will certainly keep the model in my mind.

I am based in Seattle, WA area. If you don't mind introducing me to your friends, it will be great.
Sincerely,
Gaurav Garg

I think, it would always save time, effort & money to relaunch a retiring/ailing business if you are confident that you can turn it around, compared to starting on its own.  The absolute start of a startup is a very lonely track to follow initially. You would also need to find and build a team of people who share your belief in your product.  You can save all that effort & time by picking up an existing business.

It also depends on what sort of product/service idea you have in mind. If its not done before then you may be better off starting from scratch and if it or its closely resembling avatars are done before then finding out a business who is not doing it well and relaunching them may be a better option.

@Nitin Arora,
Thank you very much for your thoughtful recommendation. I agree with your observations on the lonely road to the start-up.

I am trying to buy a struggling start-up through commercial brokers Seattle, WA. If anyone in this group has any connections, please let me know. I am most interested in Mobile Workforce Management and/or Hybrid Cloud start-ups.
Sincerely,
Gaurav

Hi Gaurav,

Can you send me a test mail so that I can connect you.

Hi Gaurav

I am an adviser on business connector to a Mobile workforce management business in Noida, New Delhi. They are doing fine but not able to scale up and/or expand. I guess they can use a cash injection, strategy revamp and business model re-configuration to grow beyond national borders.  The guy who runs it has been featured in Indian National TV tech news twice for business segment related context.  They also have clients like Punjab Police and NSA of India.

If you are interested then let me know by email and I can connect you with them!
Cheers!
