looking for a simple budget and expense template (spreadsheet)

Anonymous

April 7th, 2016

We are an early stage SaaS tech startup at a close to initial revenue stage.

I'm looking for a simple spreadsheet template for calculating the required budget, expenses, and burn rate over time.

A template that can help us calculate the required funds needed (will also used for fundraising).

Too many founders wing it when it comes to financials and have no idea how to use basic modeling to drive strategy. In this course, we’ll teach you how to build a basic financial model, read financial statements, and understand cash flow, balance sheets, and income statements.

Financial modeling is a bit of a hobby for me. Here's a spreadsheet that I did not initially author, but, did heavily modify. You'll have to adjust everything to model your business, but, it will give you a fantastic head start. Good luck!

update 4/8/2016.  I looked through the spreadsheet again.  I really did modify the original quite a bit.  Some of it was to correct errors, some of it to make the model more robust, and some of it was to make it work for my specific use case.  I'd recommend looking at the original model (links are in the spread) as well as the one that I attached here.

We use EZ Numbers and it seems to work quite well. http://www.eznumbers.com/

Since you mentioned you will be fundraising, LivePlan could be worth a look. While it does not include an editable spreadsheet, its built-in forecasting tool produces nicely formatted pro forma financial statements (P&L, Balance Sheet, Cash Flow) and summary graphs, while striking a nice balance between simple-to-use (with excellent step-by-step instructions) and powerful.

Not trying to be blatantly sales-pitchy here, but with ClearFactr you'll get the editable spreadsheet, sharable to others where they can easily create and compare their own scenarios but without you having to "lock down" the model.  These "others" can of course be potential investors.

Then on your dashboard, you'll see who has opened the model, how many times, when, what scenario's they created, etc... basically a built-in "virtual data room."  With all of this data you can better decide how to follow up...

You should definitely check out ClearFactr. We have a number of templates that can help you get started, but as we're still early stage I'd be happy to help you personally. ClearFactr is a financial modeling platform that happens to look and feel like a spreadsheet. Legacy formula syntax ($G27/F29) is replaced with English and the types of analytics that people take hours to hand-code are build right-in (sensitivity analysis, scenario management and comparisons, Monte Carlo simulations, etc.). All running in your web browser.

We were featured on Product Hunt recently: producthunt.com/tech/clearfactr

All of this adds up to a much easier and yet way more powerful modeling experience, and a more effective way convey your model to interested parties and drive engagement and collaboration. Let me know how we can help.

 Thanks,
- Dean
