Hello Shelia, we have Google PPC in place and it has transformed our business. However, my main goal is to drive organic traffic to the site. There are still effective "old school" marketing methods, but they are expensive. Have you done research on key words? How popular is your solution online? Are many people searching for what you offer? I would first start there before embarking on an online strategy. 75% of my efforts are dedicated to my website. It needs to be mobile responsive and appealing to the eye with the right message. Think of it this way. You have a shop in a mall, however, you have a brick wall blocking your front door. How will anyone find you? Your online strategy is your brick wall. Driving traffic to your site is easy, it just takes time and effort. Organic traffic takes 5-7 months, but when you have thousands of people visiting your site, it will be tough to keep up with the demand. Well, taking away everything on this list, we are left with personal sales, paid advertisement, affiliation marketing, flyers, newsjacking... But wait, why do we need to ignore social media, word of mouth, etc.?
Know. Your. Customer.
Where are customers getting their information about you or similar products/services like yours (or where should they be getting that information)? The answer to this question should help guide what you're spending resources and time on.
Don't underestimate the impact of word of mouth, but if in doubt use a megaphone - local newspapers and media outlets (especially in your hometown) are a great way to inexpensively get the word out if you're doing something interesting. Obviously depends on the kind of business you're in though; not necessarily time well spent if you're a software business for instance.
There's so many ways to approach this.
In most cases Facebook will be the best channel for outbound efforts. Getting in front of new eyes will be easiest there.
Mid funnel is more tricky. I personally see great success with Facebook, but Google can be great for startups in less-competitive markets.
Bottom-funnel goes to email marketing. Hands down. Best conversion method for the money (essentially nothing).
