Music licensing and reselling online?

John Rau Online Marketing Strategist

I have a startup idea to resell music online through a webapp, and then ship it to the customer in a unique format.

It would work something like this:
  1. Customer selects some songs
  2. They pay a price, which consists of the licensing fee, our costs and our markup
  3. We custom-manufacture the physical media and record the purchased music onto it
  4. We ship it to the customer
Afterwards we would forward the license fee to the proper parties.

Does anyone know if there exists a way to purchase through itunes, or amazon, or some other provider through an API, and then if the rights can be transferred to someone else (from us to our customer), in another format (hard media)?

We have an API and 250,000 tracks from 12,000 independent labels, artists and publishers. We also have an expertise in music licensing. I would like to learn more about what you are doing.

You will need to contact the publisher and the record company of each of the songs you wish to licence and explains your proposal

The record company represents the rights in the recording crested by the artists

The music publisher represents the rights in the music composition created by the composer / songwriter

I've done a few licensing deals.

Masur Law knows the space extremely well and was always a great advisory resource for me.

Good luck!

In terms of an API for purchasing music, I have some experience working with 7digital and MediaNet for one of my startups (Mixette).  The hard part will be getting the labels comfortable with your distribution model since it sounds a little unique.  We also have a bit of a unique distribution model (buying digital music for another person vs. buying for yourself), and 7digital was able to successfully negotiate with some of the labels on our behalf.
