On-line Product Marketing/Management skills tutorial?

Steve Madere Software Technology Consultant

April 28th, 2013

Recently, another FDer asked about on-line programming courses for
non-tech people and it got me thinking about cross-functional skills development.

I think it would be just fantastic if all of the developers on my team had some
idea of how to do rudimentary Product Marketing in order to improve the match between
newly developed products and actual market needs.

As a mostly tech guy, I see software programming tutorials all over the place but I
can't say I've ever seen any good on-line introductions to the process of
Product Marketing/Product Management.

Have any of you?

I've been curious about finding something like this too.

The closest I've found is an upcoming General Assembly course here in SF on product management. I'm contemplating enrolling in it, but it's a bit pricey, and a lot of their courses in the past have been a lot of fluff without substance. I'm going to the info session though to find out more. https://generalassemb.ly/education/product-management

I took this class online through GA for $35.00 -

It was pretty light on content, however might be worth the $35 to see if it's what you're looking for in a very general overview. I also took it a while ago, so it may have evolved since then.  I also came across this version, that I can't vouch for, however is probably very similar to the class offered directly through GA ($29 with 30 day money back guarantee) -

Hope that's helpful.  I'd be interested in anyone's thoughts on either of the two courses, or any alternatives that were worth the investment.

I have had the opportunity to work with a variety of tech startups in a consulting capacity as a product strategist. When I take on new projects I constantly try to apply various readings to improve my ability and performance.  A movement that I believe is becoming extremely influential in product marketing and management is what is being called Growth Hacking.  The Growth Hacking movement is being led by Mattan Griffel.  Below is a link to a slide share in which he explains the Growth Hacking theories, methodology and use cases.
http://www.slideshare.net/mattangriffel/growth-hacking

You will also find classes that delve deeper into growth hacking at General Assembly. There is an interesting product management course coming up that I am considering exploring at GA.  The curriculum was developed by Jeremy Horn, I believe leader of the Product Management Meetup group and Product Manager of Viacom.  The course begins May 13th at GA in NYC but to my knowledge they have not announced the course professor to this point.  I have heard good things about the course but that is about as much context I can offer.  Here is a link to the class:

Lastly, I would absolutely read further into the lean startup methodologies.  They are not only for programmers and designers, but the same methods apply to acquire consumers, understanding user experience and behavior, testing theories, evaluating results and making data driven decisions.

Always happy to talk further.

P.S.
I am currently looking for a technical co-founder, preferably in the NYC area, to work on a dish discovery startup with me.  Please feel free to shoot me a message if you are interested in discussing further and learning more about what I am working on.

Sorry can't recommend an online resource.  I went to Marty Cagan's two-day seminar How to Create Products Customers Love which is based on his book Inspired and really got a lot out of it and is not cheap, I think around $2K/person.  I went out there with my product management team and we all found it super useful.  It's also a good idea to read the book beforehand.

Check Steve Blank's customer development class in Udacity https://www.udacity.com/course/ep245. It's about lean startup product management. A must if you haven't taken it yet. It's free, on demand.
