Press Release/PR packet?

We are in the last stretch of our launch and I'm wondering if anyone has stats or thoughts on whether to launch with a press release/PR packet, or whether to do a soft launch without any press.  What are the pros and cons of each?  Would love to hear and get advice from this awesome FD community.  Thanks!

I agree with Jennifer that much depends on the product, investment, etc. Putting together a basic packet and release will help you decide. Are you completely clear in your product description? Can you quickly and concisely articulate the consumer benefit? We recommend putting together a very tough q&a, with all the questions you can think of (good to bring in people who are not as familiar with your product)  that are hard to answer. This gives you a good base for your talking points and release.  
Identify where you want to be seen/heard. Find the right reporter/blogger/writer and offer an interview. You may even want to consider an exclusive. 
If your PR firm is not doing this with you... move. 
And unless you're in stealth mode, which I am assuming you are not, get some press.

I think PR for a startup depends a lot on the product, the financial investment, who is backing it and the use case. It is fine to post a release on your website and share on social media, but don't expect much coverage without working with reporters far ahead of time on the details of the product or exclusive previews.

I do think that press releases are important in terms of organizational strategy and really help to get everyone on the same page regarding talking points, but the only way a story gets told is by having something to say and the relationships to make the coverage happen.
