SaaS: Accepting Credit Cards at Sign Up with PayPal & Infusionsoft?

Working on a Saas Sign Up process.  Switching to collecting a credit card and charging from the start (eliminating the current 30-Day Free Trial).  I have PayPal and Infusionsoft ... and advice or resources on how to best set this up from a UX/UI standpoint and from a business efficiency standpoint.  Thanks.

I would stay far from Paypal. Stripe and Braintree have treated me well in the past. I would definitely take a look at subscription management service providers like Recurly*. They save you a lot of dev time and give you a nice toolbox to handle a growing customer base, see and mitigate churn, deal with expired credit cards, dunning, help with fraud detection, cohort analysis, etc.

We just did this for a client. It's not ideal--we created a recurring product in Infusionsoft, then use their API to authenticate users when they sign-up, using a separate DB within our client's SaaS product to store the user's authentication credentials. Each time a user logs in, we first authenticate then hit the Infusionsoft API to ensure their subscription is still valid. Upon initial signup, the user is taken to a page where they set their password. If you have the option, I would recommend taking a look at some of the solutions others have suggested as I agree with other posters that Infusionsoft is not ideal for this (nor is PayPal). At Redbooth, we started with a basic stack and have evolved it as we've scaled. We use Hubspot and Salesforce for marketing and sales automation. In the past, we used Marketo and have evaluated Pardot and other providers.

I suppose my core questions would relate to why you're moving from 30-day trial to an immediate sale. And, how you'll demonstrate sufficient value to the user immediately to enable them to make a solid buying decision. Minimizing buying frictions and perceived risk will help ensure you maximize conversion and customer retention.

Thank you for all the great responses and resource recommendations.  Going to add using PayPal and Infusionsoft to a long list of "lessons learned" throughout this process.

Brent - Good read, appreciate it.

James Allen - I've heard good things about Stripe and will investigate more.  Chatted with intercom and they look like a solid and inexpensive solution - if we ever meet dinner is on me!  And the pricing strategy article was informative and validated some of the moves that I am making.  This relates to the Bomnipotent app which we are re-skinning at the moment.

James, David, Jon - I am looking into your recommendations.  Thanks for the help.  Appreciate it.

I'm working on a SaaS app at the moment and my co-founder/developer recommended we use Stripe for payment processing. Stripe is very developer-friendly and has a good reputation.

Regarding the marketing automation side, I would recommend using Intercom.io instead of Infusionsoft. For one, Intercom.io's pricingseems more reasonable and affordable than Infusionsoft's pricing, and Intercom.io is meant specifically for SaaS companies whereas Infusionsoft is not.

If you're looking for a truly all-in-one solution, Intercom.io may also be a better choice because they include a support/ticket system. Assuming you don't need a support solution as large and complicated as Zendesk, Intercom.io may be able to meet all your needs.

You may want to reconsider eliminating your 30-day free trial... Lincoln Murphy from Sixteen Ventures has a great series on pricing strategy for SaaS companies where he addresses free trials and a host of other pricing-related issues. I recommend reading his blog post here and watching the free video series (click the green button that says Pricing Page Success Formula).

By the way, I stumbled across Chefmetrics not too long ago and think it's a brilliant idea! I wish you all the best with that and Bomnipotent, too.
