I have a friend who needs an entertainment lawyer and asked me for a recommendation. I don't, and I don't even know the first thing about search for or screening one, but I imagine there must be someone must have experience with this. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Phil Kelley is a personal friend and partner with Kendall Brill & Klieger in Los Angeles.  I've known Phil for 30 years.  Haven't had a need for an expert in entertainment law, but know Phil to be honest, smart and trustworthy.

Interesting, I know John Fagerholm, as well. I have worked in entertainment for the past decade...you could do pretty decent lawyer shopping on LinkedIn forums where they congregate. Just do a search for Entertainment Attornies and join the groups. You can post questions on their forums and get good recommendations. Right now, law is a very saturated field, so hopefully this will allow you/your friend to price shop a little bit. A little! -- entertainment counsel is expensive.

As far as the specific details I'm unsure but it sounds like the information thus far should give her a great starting point. I'll forward this along and let me thank you all graciously on her behalf!

What specific area of entertainment law? I know a very good attorney based in Chicago if it is the right fit.

It depends on whether you're looking for traditional film and television or for New Media.

For Film, Broadcast Media and online video I'd recommend Stan Coleman of Weintraub Tobin, who is hooked very deeply into both the "Traditional Hollywood" and New Media circles.  http://www.weintraub.com/Attorneys/Stan_Coleman

If issues are about distribution of any kind I'd recommend a non-attorney who is one of the most respected guys in film on issues of distribution (after leaving studio exec roles to be independent), Seth Willenson.  http://www.linkedin.com/pub/seth-willenson/1/a96/161, email sethwillenson at gmail etc.

If you're looking at interactive media then in San Francisco I'd recommend Jennifer Stanley at Fenwick and West http://www.fenwick.com/professionals/pages/jenniferstanley.aspx

On the SF Peninsula for interactive I'd recommend Emma Maconick at King & Spaulding http://www.kslaw.com/people/Emma-Maconick

I've worked with all four and can recommend them personally.  Hope this helps!

I know a bunch of entertainment lawyers, but it's a fairly specialized world. What is your friend looking to have accomplished?
