Simple Accounting systems/softwares for early stage companies

What are some of the popular accounting platforms or softwares that early stage companies use to keep track of their expenses? Excel is definitely one option, but I wondering if there is anything a little superior to that for accounting.

As for my company, we are still pretty early stage and it does not make sense to hire an accountant. Therefore I was wondering if anyone has recommendations for softwares/platforms we can use.

Thank you!

A lot of the credit cards give you this feature. Amex does  decent job of tracking and allowing you to create categories. Otherwise Quick Books.
