Single Sign on -- LinkedIn?

Chandra Jacobs

January 27th, 2013

Hi everyone,

I have a more tech focused question this time--so *calling all developers.*

I want to implement my SSO with LinkedIn and Facebook. My target audience
is the "business man" hence LinkedIn. But I have heard rumors about
LinkedIn\'s OAuth being problematic (http://wayne-doucette.blogspot.com/
2011/05/single-sign-on-with-facebook-linkedin.html<http://wayne-doucette.blogspot.com/2011/05/single-sign-on-with-facebo...>
).

What has been your experience? If you don\'t want to broadcast to the group,
just email me directly. Thanks in advance!

Cheers,
*Chandra*

Hi Chandra,

I agree with Shlomi about a solution that can not only allow you to
"plug-in" LinkedIn but also others, and THEY (the plug-in) provider does
the update work.

Singly.com is a great free one and includes services like Fb, LinkedIn,
Droobox etc etc. Wish I had known about it earlier.
(You get charged at a high level of usage that you will not be thinking
about the charge in the same way)

Best,
Kevin

Hi Chandra,

What are you developing with? I\'m most familiar working with Ruby on Rails
and integration with the most popular networks (FB, Twitter, Linkedin) is
pretty straightforward thanks to Omniauth.

Hey Chandra,

A small comment for the team - the link you provided is broken (extra
...have at the end). The url is:

I have implemented social login functionality with both FB and LinkedIn
recently (php based web application) and it seems to be working fine. I
have not used their interface directly but rather used an open source
plugin called HybridAuth (http://hybridauth.sourceforge.net/). There are a
few other offerings such as Janrain or Gigya (most of them are paid) that
provide you with similar functionality.
I believe that instead of investing time in integrating directly with each
one of these identity providers (i.e. social networks), you better of use a
plugin/service to handle it for you.
The main point made in the blog post is that it is complex and they
frequently change their interface. I cannot attest to that but, using a
plugin/service leave this headache for companies that focus on social
login. It is their business and they will stay on top of all changes.

Hope this helps,
Shlomi

I\'ve implemented LinkedIn auth in Rails using the OmniAuth gem -- seems to
work just fine. Email me directly if you want to discuss details.
