Sourcing / factories for apparel and smart fabric prototypes / rough design

Jason Kowalski Product Manager @ Amazon

January 20th, 2014

Hi guys,

My team has spent a lot of time designing new innovative clothing (that may be using smart fabric). While we've tried our hands on the sowing machine, we really need someone to help us flesh out our design. Does anyone know any good sourcing / factories to get this prototype made whether in the U.S or abroad?

We aren't so concerned finding a wholesale partner yet; instead we just want some prototypes. Turn around time is important, so thinking U.S. Any ideas? If there's no great way to do this, I suppose we can try to talk to some tailors, haha.

Thanks!

You might also be able to hit up http://www.plugandwear.com/ (Italy) - Might be more of a partnership rather than just prototyping opportunity though. Riccardo (founder) is very responsive on twitter.

Also I'm very interested in e-textile prototyping so I'd love to make contact. Fell free to hit me up to chat idanforth@embodiedai.com / 650-391-4467

Maker's Row is a good start point, if you're ready for a small batch.

If you want prototypes I'd hit someone at Parson's or check out Coroflot:
http://www.coroflot.com/people#specialty=15&page_no=1

From there find a D2M soft goods expert who can take your prototype, optimize it for manufacturing (simplify the sewing steps, pattern complexity etc.) and deliver ready to cut patterns. Then you just need to find a sew shop, you can hit SF / NYC or LA for domestic work at small batches then overseas when you're hitting larger quantities.

We have a manufacturing set up in China and can manufacture for you. However, to make it viable we need a minimum of 2000 units per style. You can get an idea of the type of product we manufacture from our website: www.mvvz.ca.

Best Regards,
Nil.
