Was Uber’s decision to pull out of China smart or misguided?

Last year Uber sold its China unit to Didi Chuxing, which is now the largest ride-sharing/hailing company in the country of nearly 1.4b people. While nearly every company that doesn’t have to deal with Chinese censors has expanded into the country, Uber pulled out. Was Uber smart to cut its losses or did it miss a huge opportunity?
