What are some best practices for Instagram marketing?

Drew Palmer

I run a user-curated photography blog and I recently started an Instagram account to promote my site. Aside from trending hashtag use in a specified category, I feel like there have to be other methods of marketing that will attract followers and generate interest. Any thoughts?

Especially early on, a good technique is to follow similar accounts to help grow your following.

Start by searching a relevant hashtag and then click through the picture to the profile and follow the account. A lot of them will reciprocate. You should follow at least 50-100 accounts per day.

Thanks, Jason! I've been doing that, just not to the extent that I probably need to. My biggest concern is attracting a very specific target audience, so I like the idea of targeting specific hashtags or keywords and following them to specified users.

Thanks again.

Drew, we are building an Instagram targeting platform that will allow you to segment/cull users with incredible accuracy, more than a regular search will provide.

for example... Show me ALL users who:

follow NIKE
follow RunningMagazine
who live in NYC
who have "Runner" in their bio
who posted #runner
who have 2x the followers they are following ( ie influencers )

want to betatest this when it comes out?

Nice question. Post great content once to twice per day if possible. Make sure the content is of high quality as everything you put out reflects your brand. Best to schedule the posts so you don't have to spend time faffing about everyday. Message everyone who follows you and is in your target demographic and have a conversation with them, you will learn a lot just from that if you ask a lot of open questions.
