Thank you, I needed a laugh this morning. Isn't this the same question every company has when considering how to build their business? If there was a magic answer, everyone would be successful. It's unfortunately not an easy answer. And even with millions of dollars, still not a guarantee.
First, you don't need freebies, you need value. What drives a decision is being where people are looking for a thing at the time they're looking (relevance), and delivering credible value.
So, if you know where your potential audience is when they're looking and can be there at the right time, with clear value, then they will open up to you.
There's very little benefit to generating a huge influx of users if they're just going to leave right away, think your product sucks, or there's no story that's worth them sharing with others. If you haven't developed something worth talking about, there will never be a network effect. And if the only news that spreads is poor ratings, then you've poisoned your business at the start.
In summary your key ingredients to build a user base are:
