What are the best ways to go about finding and approaching investors?

I'm new to finding investors. I'm curious about others experiences with seeking out and approaching investors. What has worked for you, what didn't, how difficult was it, etc? I'm trying to learn as much as I can so I can begin seeking out investors.

I tend to approach investors who are passionate about my space.  If not, I'm wasting time if I'm pitching to anyone else. I'll do my research and see what companies they've invested in, what their area of expertise is, and see who else they're connected to. (Angelist is good for this) 

 I'll also attend industry conferences and ask around, get a feel for who's investing or advising in my type of company.

That's a really broad question. An investor is a buyer of an investment, and you're the seller. What investment are you selling? Otherwise, your question could be rephrased as "I'm looking for people who will buy my thing. What has worked for you?"

So, can you elaborate a bit? What's the thing you'd like to find investors for?

Nick:
I recommend checking out incubators. They are popping up all over the place.
Also check out angel investor groups.  You can find a list at teh Angel Capital Association.
Be clear on what stage you are at - many people will call themselves angels but they really want to look at  only de-risked investments. So to avoid wasting your time, figure out if you are seed, early stage, series A etc. and communicate that when contacting groups or individuals.
