What are the options for monetizing site visits without prompting for payment or advertising?  Advertising aside, what from a data or use perspective is valuable?  Any ideas are appreciated.  I am looking to fund an open source effort.  Thanks!

Thanks Mike - the site is a repository of public data sets available via query or api. It is a collection of third party free data for use by data scientists, statisticians and analysts. Basically, it's a giant pile of smart! Thx

As mentioned by Satya, retargetting cookies is one of the easier ways.

Depending on the site content and user generated data created there may be many awesome way to derive revenue. Sites like https://www.patientslikeme.com/ are good examples of how you can create data on your site and sell it to interested bodies.

What is the content on the site itself?

An obvious omission is selling products or services. A less obvious one is getting a corporate sponsor who will put discreet, unobtrusive messages on your content but not necessarily on your home page. Partnering with someone to develop a site and get paid by them is a third way. And a fourth option is getting grants, but if you're a for-profit entity, that's unlikely.

Retargetting cookie. You do not need to show ads on your site. If you have a niche audience, cookies can be very valuable to strategic partners.
