What is a good customer acquisition strategy for retail?

I am going to launch a private beta for my startup in two months and curious to hear thoughts on best way for customer acquisition.

The startup is in retail space and more specifically fast casual.  There is going to be free credit  to incentivize customers to download the app and use it for first time purchase.  We are targeting very specifically for Financial District in SF.   Obviously there will be in store promotion but I feel this is not enough and not scalable in the long run.  so I have been thinking how to best to get the words out for users who are in SF and especially those in the financial district?

Buying email lists is a very risky proposition these days given that email marketing regulations warrant opt-ins and it is very tough to get quality lists. If your bounce and opt-out rates exceed certain levels then you're dead in the water.  My recommendation would be to target the specific firms in the financial district that have employees in your exact target audience.  They'll be in the right proximity to your location and they'll have the discretionary income to spend. Then I would look-up on LinkedIn and see who the HR contacts are responsible for their employee benefits program.  Then I would offer them the ability for the company to participate in the program which would extend discounts to the employees. This would be a free benefit to the employees and would drive traffic into the store.  Equip the HR managers with emails and collateral that they can send to the employees. If you've got an app, perhaps they'll merchandise it on their intranet. Make sure they know this is a beta program and make them feel like they're a part of something special.  Perhaps throw an exclusive after hours event - invitation only to the select companies in the financial district. Take pictures and do a write-up for your social media channels.

Hi Vivian, 

I would suggest finding and targeting trend setters in your target market.  These may be customers with large social media presence.  Once you find them, offer them specific incentives like discounts or club membership.

Hi Vivian, When you refer to customer acquisition you have to go on with a SEM program so that to increase traffic to the site. I think this is your objective. PPC and SEO for increasing traffic and sales. For fast results you have to go on with PPC.
