What is a reasonable expectation for ROI using online advertising in the fitness market?

I have been paying various SEO companies to get my website noticed and to eventually make my phone ring. They all tell me it takes months and each has told me the others work is wrong and that they need to fix it but after thousands of dollars over 6 or 7 years I still have not gotten a single phone call. I am beginning to wonder if advertising for fitness services is of any use at all.
Forget about “build it and they will come.” Products without scalable distribution channels will fail to gain traction. Instead of hiring an expensive marketing team, take this course to learn SEO, content marketing, retargeting, viral loops, email marketing, and sales funnel optimization.

Sounds like tracking is more what you need to establish.

I can tell you that if I am looking for a gym or fitness instructor, etc.. referrals from friends would probably be big, but I am definitely going onto google as well.

Good digital marketing people will help you track KPI's for the SEO or things you are doing; how much people coming to site (from where), how many at key page in your website sales funnel, how many convert to leads.

I like to have 1 'conversion' page on the website.  Each service page or info page is designed to funnel the visitors to that 'conversion' page (usually the contact page).  I then setup A/B testing on that page (example, with optimizely) and then test out a couple of offers / variations to see which converts most.

Of course you need to have analytics setup, call-tracking, etc.. to know the results.

You can measure the effectiveness of the SEO companies if you have good analytics and tracking setup.

Your ROI depends first and foremost on your business strategy. Was your marketing analysis exhaustive enough? This is just a first question.
The main mistake is to entrust your lead generation to outside SEO experts of questionable character. Maybe you even don't need to apply to their services and you will be able to work out the problem by yourself.
I'd like to suggest you some valuable articles.
There is a checklist for you:
  • Quality of your website - I don't mean that you need a new website, you can easily check and improve many things by your own or your in-house specialists.
Read this: How to improve your website for lead generation? Why your website may scare the clients off?
  • Your overall promotion strategy: What promo channels do you use?
This article is about mobile apps, but read the paragraph about marketing channels, especially Social Media Marketing. Social Media are extremely useful in your business promotion, especially if you're going into such topical issues as healthcare or fitness.

I worked for an agency in Dubai, one of our clients is a fitness gym here are the numbers we got from that client

People do search for gyms  but they don't convert unless there is a human following up. So consider asking them for their names and phone numbers using a very tailored and specific landing page that highlights your credibility( show examples of people who were successful working with you)

Don't make a huge website, consider three pages max where you talk about the benefits and motivate people leave their numbers and names

Add a chat widget where users can talk to you this will increase your conversation rate and you will what people are asking about to optimize your pages

Buy a phone call tracking services like twilio where you record the calls from leads who call in to make sure your receptionist is not the leak for your leads . I listen to calls with permission of our clients to do quality control

Do not hire SEO just to get rake higher but also to track and analyze traffic and leads behaviors so you can adjust your offers

Hi Ken,
who's your target buyer ( or who would you like it to be )?
How do you track a conversion?
( lots of people don't want to call a business - that could be a conversion blocker )

If your business is local:
- do local citations submissions
- google maps tagging - labeling
- craigslist & other classifieds with your phone # & address & website
- facebook, linkedin etc social networks profiles & business pages
- local forums & fitness forums: reply smart to people with your link in signature
- quora, reddit etc fitness groups

I agree with Scott. Skip any further SEO at this point and focus on PPC instead. See which search terms (if any) bring in leads. Don't worry so much about cost-per-conversion yet - use the PPC campaigns primarily to find out where (in terms of keywords) the demand is. Do that for about 6 months, and then use what you learn there to decide how (or if) to continue doing PPC and/or SEO.

SEO only needs to be done one time per page. Companies that charge a monthly fee are ripping you off unless you are adding daily content. These days it should only take around 2 weeks for all pages to be indexed and ranked.

In addition, make sure that the title tags and description tags are written with a good SEO'ed headline and a call-to-action with the description paragraph in a very similar manner to how your would write a Google PPC ad.

70% of new business should come from referrals. 10% from location. 10% from traditional marketing. That leaves 10% from the Internet. There is a lot of crossover from all of the above. You may want to find a marketing consultant who does SEO so that you are get comprehensive direction and no axes to grind.

Mr. Kasper, First and foremost, 6 or 7 years; is this a joke? With 2-3months of ramp-up YP search and YP local ads are warrantied to perform within their range of clicks and leads in the form of phone calls, emails and form fills which our dashboards can demonstrate who contacted you, when, what they said, and if a legitimate lead was generated for you. I absolutely disagree that there are no lead generating Advertising, SEO/SEM providers, mostly because I work for the best. Please contact your local YP Marketing solutions office or representative so they can demonstrate how the solutions work, and provide a free customer needs analysis. If you are anywhere near Northern New Jersey, please call or write to me and I will take care of you personally. Identify the queries you think will convert the most, and then run a short PPC test to see of those terms actually do convert for you. If so, continue with SEO (to win those terms). If not, then word of mouth and other vehicles might be a better fit for your business.
