Just hired my first employee! Do you have any recommendations for the easiest, cheapest payroll service/tool for a company with less than 5 employees?

You can try wagepoint.com or paymatesoftware.com

You can also think of using ADP and later outsource complete Payroll to ADP, they are good and quite reasonable in pricing.

I like Justworks, but the cheapest is doing it yourself from QuickBooks desktop.

ADP is not an ideal choice for such a small company. Paychex is better for sub 20 employees. Even better for your size is BBSI, http://www.barrettbusiness.com/, which provides great service for even one employee. BBSI will start with payroll, and you can add HR management, a full suite of benefits, and workers comp as needed. You can contact Carol Ann Witschi, Carolann.witschi at bbsihq.com

As others have mentioned, a PEO (Insperity, ADP, etc) can do more than just payroll. There is a PEO comparison service that will do a complete workup for your business' particulars: PEOSpectrum.com

(disclaimer: we've done work for them)

Hope that helps!

Insperity offers PEO services for companies with as few as five (5) employees.  Insperity also offers traditional payroll services for companies with as few as one (1) employee. www.insperity.com

We have had too many problems with upstart payroll providers.  We recommend ADP or Paychex.

Payroll4free.com is free.  They require an advertisement to be put on your website in exchange.  If that's okay with you then it's hard to beat free for a startup.
