I just recently graduated school, and currently work as a trader for a small investment shop. I would like to be able to grow something with my own hard work and elbow grease, and I'm hoping I can dedicated time after market close to this new idea. I am passionate about many things but need a way to connect with others who have or share similar new ideas to mine.
Enthusiasm is an important ingredient because it drives you forward with a lot of force, but it doesn't change the basic skills that you need to develop in building a business or even contributing to building someone else's business. Forget passion, that's not a good enough reason to support a business.
I'm not saying you shouldn't have strong feelings about things you care about. What I'm saying is lead with your head, not your heart. It's business, not your life. Your head has to temper your interests and determine whether or not something is "worth" doing, meaning it will be financially successful, or at least financially neutral.
Hard work doesn't equal success. Exceptional planning equals success. That means research! So yes to elbow grease, but keep in the front of your mind ideas are cheap, and research is priceless. I'm suggesting you should not look for people who think the way you do, because that is an easy trap where you receive agreement instead of thought, a quick path to business death. You will do the best work with people who think nothing like you, because they will challenge ideas and come up with solutions you would never find with a group that thinks as you do.
What you do want is people who share your VALUES, not your ideas. Talk about WHY you are interested in things, not just the things you're interested in. This will lead you to people who share your values. Let them bring more ideas to you that elevate and inspire you to more than you would have thought of on your own. Don't stay in a room where you're the smartest person, you will learn very little. And good luck!
You should try startup portals like this and search the person with delightful thoughts.
You might be creator, investor or communication person.
What is your idea? Your area may have local meetups for entrepreneurs or local events where you ca meet other people working on things that are similar. Also, maybe an accelerator program would be helpful. Best of luck!
