Hardware

What is the best way to start buying hardware for small orders that you hope to grow bigger.

I need to move beyond my prototypes by building a few "ready to sell" devices.  One of my largest pieces is an LCD panel,  I have looked around alibaba.com and made some requests but they quote me more then Best Buy sells them for.  I would like to buy 10's of units.  Is there a resource anyone can recommend?

Some electronic supply houses that come to mind are http://www.digikey.com/ and http://www.mouser.com/. There are certainly others before getting into 100's or 1000's of units.

Tom, If you are looking for finished goods like LCD panels with bezels, power cords and warranties, then Dell's OEM group is a good source. They can provide servers, PCs and peripherals to you that: 1. already have regulatory approval to ship anywhere in the world, 2. already have commercial support services and spare parts available around the world 3. they can finance, so you don't even have to pay for them upfront! This group understands engineers rather than IT people, so they can talk to extended life cycle products. They can even do bezel customization and load your software right out of their factories for single orders. Most importantly, if your product takes off, they can handle your ever increasing order quantities with no problem. Hope this helps, Josh

Thanks Josh, but no I am needing parts, I.e. the actual LCD panel without bezel.  Although I might look at them anyway since I have used some dell parts for my prototypes.

I agree with Brian.  You may also be able to get some local prototyping / consulting houses to help with hardware purchasing and even ODM relationships.

Thanks Manu & Brian, but I have checked all of those.  They do now carry the high end and large panels.

Another one is CDW. They're great for monitors and the like. That said, if you're talking about first production prototypes, I wouldn't worry about getting the best price. Remember that your time is valuable and expensive, and every moment you spend shopping for the best deal is time that your product isn't in front of customers.

Tom,  I may be able to help you here.  My company, Republic International, Inc here in Austin Texas sources these types of items for small OEM's and ODM's. Our main clients are actually in Mexico, but our sources are from China and Korea. What size, color depth, etc of LCD screens are you looking for?
