After reading several books on this topic I am still at a loss. What are your thoughts on this?

simplify the image of a leader. For me, as a kid, Glory (the movie with Matthew Broderick leading a regiment with African Americans) was a great impression and example of what a Leader is.

obviously a question that can be answered in million ways. and you should definitely read a lot of leadership books and practice by doing to come to your very own conclusions. but I felt that after years of leading teams and reading a lot of leadership book this one resonated most with me: Jurgen Appelo "Agile Management". At least for the tech space you are adapting your leadership style to tech style and you are following what inspires people to work.

there are different styles of leadership---think of it this way--a flock of geese always trade off the leader when flying in formation and work together for the good of the group--the focus can be on character, interpretation or interaction
