obviously a question that can be answered in million ways. and you should definitely read a lot of leadership books and practice by doing to come to your very own conclusions. but I felt that after years of leading teams and reading a lot of leadership book this one resonated most with me: Jurgen Appelo "Agile Management". At least for the tech space you are adapting your leadership style to tech style and you are following what inspires people to work.

A great leader is someone who sets a great example of respecting everyone around him. With that he gains the respect of those around him. He has passion for what he's up to. Most importantly, he takes responsibility for the outcome of everything in his life, including business, even when events beyond his control affect that outcome.

simplify the image of a leader. For me, as a kid, Glory (the movie with Matthew Broderick leading a regiment with African Americans) was a great impression and example of what a Leader is.
