What’s the best wiki-style software for project documentation?

I'm looking for the best solutions to help my engineering team store, organize, edit and obviously share useful technical knowledge and best practices. Ideally it will have:
- easy editing
- good search
- access control

Would love to hear what other dev leads and technical cofounders are using.

Check out Redmine.  It's a software targeted project development system that we use to manage our entire engineering organization.  Very complete.  Wiki is just one module.  Very well supported too.

Just use Github wiki - you can keep your code and documentation together. You can have private repos for proprietary code, and public repos for anything you want to open source.

I looked at a few & selected DokuWiki; I'm satisfied with that choice.

I've been quite happy with Atlassian Confluence.  There's a rich set of plugins available, the formatting is fairly complete and reliable, and they have both cloud-hosted and conventional licensing options.  Some of the features we find especially helpful:
* Checklists
* Page templates
* Comments
* Revision history with visual diffs
* Flexible Notifications
* Page hierarchy, with navigation pane
* Code blocks with syntax highlighting
* WYSIWYG editing, with auto formatting:  start a paragraph with *, press the spacebar, and you've begun a bulleted list, like Google Docs.  Enclose in double curly braces for fixed-space code formatting.

I recommend Confluence by Atlassian .  It is a powerful corporate wiki which you can get is as either SAAS or install it onsite.  It integrates nicely with Atlasian's other tools, like JIRA (issue/bug tracking), Bamboo (CI, release management).
