What software do you use for project management for both internal / external customers?

I've used basecamp (which I sort of hate) and am looking for new alternatives.  I've used flow for task tracking and that works well, but it's not the full featured and a little hard to learn.

Basically, I'm looking to deploy a system for one of my clients that they can use for both internal and external project / asset management and time scheduling.

Internally at Playstudios we've been using Trello pretty successfully. It's light weight to use, very visual so everyone can see which projects are in what status. It seems to have just enough power to cover getting in depth also: to-do lists, attachements, notifications, etc.

I've used Flow for the last few years and it's served me well for large team projects as well as quick projects.  I'm also close with the team behind the product and have thrown far too many suggestions, bugs, and referrals their way ;)

For me, the primary draw to Flow is that, before anything else, it's personal.  By that I mean, its geared towards the solo user, but still allows you to tailor your workflow for collaboration.  Many other products (Basecamp, ActiveCollab, Asana, etc...) are more feature-rich, but from personal experience the feature overload results in individuals lose focus, doing things differently, and slow-to-no-adoption due to the learning-curve.  While at Grooveshark, we worked with probably every PM tool imagineable.  Observing the behavior of individuals, it was obvious that more wasn't better, but neither was too-little.  The ideal product was one that allowed each individual to tailor their workflow to their liking, but that still encourage discussion and awareness.

I do agree there are still some things missing from Flow, many of which I know they are working on in their next release scheduled for the Spring, but when you compare it to other alternatives, it's a definite winner.

I've been reasonably satisfied with Podio, for the price (less than Basecamp, and Teambox IIRC). I've found the functionality to be vastly more useful than Basecamp (but that's not saying much, IMO).

I'm looking to develop an app that interfaces with disparate sources (messaging platforms, public calendars, Project Mgt systems, email) and that helps visualize multiple projects/contributors on a uniform canvas/process. 

The concept is drawn up but I need someone technically proficient to consider taking this project on with us. Based at Univ. of Toledo, anyone local is highly encouraged to contact me. 

Good discussion. Sad marketplace for solutions of this sort, oddly. Seems a natural for an intuitive proj mgt sys.
