Where can I find market data on gig economy growth?

I am looking to find some market data on the growth of gig economy apps like Uber and Thumbtack. It doesn't need to be a specific app; I am trying to gather data on the market penetration and growth rate for these types of marketplace apps. Has anyone been able to come across any of this data before?
A great idea is 1% of the work. Execution is the other 99%. In this course, we’ll teach you how to conduct market analysis, create an MVP and pivot (if needed), launch your business, survey customers, iterate your product/service based on feedback, and gain traction quickly.

As someone who has worked on a freelancing app, I can tell you that getting your hands on this data is not as easy you'd think. Problem is that many freelancers don't show up in traditional employment statistics, or if they do the data is sparse. So you're left with a lot of ballparks that don't really tell the whole story. Expensive consulting reports are your best bet.

I imagine this will change soon, though, as the gig economy is exploding and all eyes are on companies like Uber and Airbnb, so data will start surfacing. Though that doesn't help people who want to get an edge right this instant.
