Where I can find someone to help me create a product that incorporates furniture and electronics?

I have a novel idea for a new physical product.  It would need to combine furniture with unique electronics (weighing devices, digital locks and digital displays that all work together).  I'm not sure how to go about finding someone who can quote me a price to build what I am thinking of.  I have a furniture maker, so the incorporation of the electronics (in an intelligent way) would be the hard part.

Any ideas?

So I have integrated sensors into furniture a few times - couches, chairs, tables, etc. Short answer to your question is that for prototyping it depends on what all you need integrated, and if you are building the furniture custom. Most of the time it is much easier to install the electronics while building the furniture as a one off, than it is to retrofit into an existing piece.

For production though, your problem is that most people who can build you furniture in quantity are not the same set of people who can work with electronics. So you have to design both the furniture and electronics to be installed, much like with a car, in more standard components that abstract the electronics into modular components.

Can you give any more information about what you need?

Hi Melisa,

I have quite a bit of experience in both hardware and software (embedded) design and wouldn't mind putting some of my spare time into something different and fun, which perhaps what you're working on is.
I would need to understand in some more detail what it is that you want to build to know if my skills would match though.

There are also a few things that comes to my mind that potentially could be of interest for a product like this, please feel free to send me a message if you want to discuss further.

You should look at Atom Design out of Arizona. They have experience in the space.

Hi Melisa,
A friend of mine in the Bay Area who is an engineer has worked on multiple products involving both software and hardware.  I'd be happy to put her in touch with you if you are interested.

Hi Melissa,

First, if you haven't done it yet, you need to decide what your ballpark budget is and what you can't go over.  Because if you don't you'll find out that the sky is the limit for other people creativity when you might want something a little more simple.

Second, find people that speak in specifics like Aaron and not generalities.

With that said, good luck.
