Recruiting

Where is a good place for recruiting first employees comfortable in a start-up environment?

We are looking for the best place to post for office help employees (not founders) who are comfortable in a lean startup culture. What tactics have people used? Have people tried Angel List for employees, for example? Just plain old craigslist?

Startuply + entrepreneurial LinkedIn discussion boards with affiliated alumni groups worked well for us when we were profitable but still bootstrapping without funding.

Thanks. This is our part-time exec/office assistant so we want to make sure we're casting our net in the right place.

In my opinion, the only way to find/hire early stage employee's is through references and referrals. you need to get the word from someone that has WORKED with that individual to know if they fit in a startup "lean" environment, are comfortable with change, can move quickly and handle confrontation well. A lot of people think they want to work in startups, but aren't actually cut out for it.

You could do something like sgsolutions.com. Then you don't have to worry about hiring people :)

Depends on what you're doing / where you're headed, but if you get a sharp person to do some of the unglamorous office work but proactively give them opportunities to help with other stuff if they show initiative, can be a good approach for getting what you need done now while building a committed team longer term.

Hi Alison,

I would look at local universities and post the JD on those for recent grads/interns. We have found it quite lucrative.

Hope this helps!

We tried Office Team for a part time office assistant.  Then we posted ads on Indeed.com and Jobjournal.com and received resumes from the same folks Office Team was promoting.  It was half the cost to hire direct and we found someone who has been with us for six months full time.
